Using the Smith Machine is a safety net for lifting without a spotter (which is the only reason I use it instead of the traditional deep squats). I've read others argue that the Smith allows a slightly heavier amount of weight in comparison to its free barbell brother, which is true given that you aren't fighting for balance through the entire lift. I like either, but the Smith provides a safety net for pushing to failure which is handy when lifting solo.-See Less
