Stomach Vacuum Guide

Main Muscle: Abdominals

  1. To begin, stand straight with your feet shoulder width apart from each other. Place your hands on your hips. This is the starting position.
  2. Now slowly inhale as much air as possible and then start to exhale as much as possible while bringing your stomach in as much as possible and hold this position. Try to visualize your navel touching your backbone.
  3. One isometric contraction is around 20 seconds. During the 20 second hold, try to breathe normally. Then inhale and bring your stomach back to the starting position.
  4. Once you have practiced this exercise, try to perform this exercise for longer than 20 seconds. Tip: You can work your way up to 40-60 seconds.
  5. Repeat for the recommended amount of sets.

Aug 2, 2011 7:22 AM: Perfect exercise for anyone like me who has diastasis recti and is limited on what abdominal exercises we can do. Works the transversus abdominis, which is our vastly important "girdle" muscle. Do these every day and watch your stomach shrink!

May 27, 2010 5:26 AM: I have split abdominals from having kids and this exercise has made a world of difference in my lower abs. This, planks and diet help keep me from looking constantly bloated.

Dec 21, 2009 6:05 AM: This is a Yoga technique and when I had learnt it I was told it was for improved digestion and fitter internal organs of the stomach area.

Didn't know it could exercise the muscles in a way to reduce girth.
