Stairmaster Guide

Main Muscle: Quadriceps

  1. To begin, step onto the stairmaster and select the desired option from the menu. You can choose a manual setting, or you can select a program to run. Typically, you can enter your age and weight to estimate the amount of calories burned during exercise.
  2. Pump your legs up and down in an established rhythm, driving the pedals down but not all the way to the floor. It is recommended that you maintain your grip on the handles so that you don’t fall. The handles can be used to monitor your heart rate to help you stay at an appropriate intensity.
  3. Stairmasters offer convenience, cardiovascular benefits, and usually have less impact than running outside. They are typically much harder than other cardio equipment. A 150 lb person will typically burn over 300 calories in 30 minutes, compared to about 175 calories walking.

Jul 19, 2011 9:20 AM: Great cardio, however not great for people with big feet. The steps smash my toes when they come around, so I have to constantly look down to make sure I don't put too much of my foot on the step.

Jul 19, 2011 9:18 AM: I don't like this exercise machine because its hard and I tire out quickly, but it is great cardio. The one thing that I don't like about this machine is that its not easy to use when you have a larger foot. I wear a size 12 and 1/2 in womens and when the stairs come around to the top again my toes...+See More

Feb 25, 2011 7:47 PM: How about walking on a treadmill on a steep incline? I would think that would be comparable.
