This is a great exercise for the Lats, but if you want to feel the burn use a bar where your palms are facing eachother, if your gym has one of those bars.

Lat pulldowns beat pull ups in my opinion because its a much better strength better, for example, if somebody cant do a pullup, lat pulldown is the mimic of pullups, so it would be better to use lat pulldowns to build up that strength. Lat pulldowns beat pull ups for strnegth building anyway because you can use different amounts of weight to suit your strength level, whereas pullups are bodyweight(unless you do them weighted).-See Less

Let Pulls Downs are one of my favourite exercises for my Lats but there is a lot of technique involved that can dramatically enhance ones results. Here are some of my favourites.
1) Shrug your shoulders and retract your scapula by shrugging your Traps before you pull the bar. This way your shoulder will be more secure and prevent injury but most importantly... now that your Traps are contracted they can nolonger help... this way more weight goes to your Lats.
2) If you pull what is in your hand, neurologically your brain will fire the next muscle in line which in this case is your bicep. So dont pull your hand. Take a good grip and pull your elbow to the floor. This way even more weight will transferr to your Lats.
3) Dont lean back. All muscles have an opposite (agonist and antagonist). Eg Pull (Bicep Curl) / Push (Tricep Pushdown). In this case you are upright when you push up in a Shoulder Press and so you must be upsright if you pull down in a Let Pull Down. If you do lean back you are changing your posture and you will fire Traps instead.
Put your pride in your pocket and do it properly for best results.

ok. To anyone wanting to build an in-depth, deeper striated, and wider back, YOU MUST START with Lats. A lat pulldown is an movement that not only wworks the Lats, but the biecps, middle back(rhomboids), Posterior deltoids, AND where people forget is the FOREARMS!

Start with a grip 2 inches below, either side, where bar is bent, so as you to perform the movement. If you notice the lat bar is shaped as a bracket lack that on a computer. That is for a reason. It isolates I believe, in my experience, the front/side part of your lat, giving it a meatier and awesome physique.
A great man once told me, 'A strong man has a strong back.'
Pull bar down to chine/mouth level with a SLIGHT bend in posture while sitting down. In other words have your back sitting in way like when your on an incline bench, BUT not leaning so far back.
*For All You Hardcore Weight lifters out there and Body Builders, I suggest NOT Using the seat which holds your knees in place. This acts as a counterweight to counterbalance the weight lifted by the whole contracted movement of a lat pulldown. IF you want to see moreresults, faster, Go Heavy W/O Seat. Make sure though it is a weight where you can do it with you butt on the seat, and not in the air. It defeats the purpose of lifting if you cheat this form. Do it heavy for 2-7 reps if you can. I guarantee anyone who tries this will see/feel immediate results ASAP, IF used correct.
*Note-Mix 'in the seat' reps, w/o seat reps. Changes your backs response to weights given and really confuses the muscle. I can only offer my experience as a guide to my knowledge. I am no personal trainer, but it'll work for anyone. I promise.-See Less

Anyone doing close, wide, or neutral grip on lat pull down with a straight bar or v-bar, trying doing it without pad that presses your knees to counter the weight your lifting. Man are they painful.
