you can use a lot of weight with this machine to build bulk, but if you want to get cut up, go medium weight, 15-20 reps with a wider range of motion than you would with heavy weight

To help on endurance, find yourself a good flight of stairs. At least a flight that will take you to a next floor. Start from the bottom knock out 3 to 5 reps. Take a step up and repeat the set again. Make sure to mix which foot you use to step up from left to right to feel a burn in your thighs...+See More

This is a great exercise to put in at the beginning of your calves routine. Because of the significant amount of weight you can invest in this movement, it's great for building power and size in your calves. Despite alot of common belief, it's definitely beneficial to perform power exercises with your calves, rather than just keeping the exercises hypertrophic. If you're only performing hypertrophic exercises for a muscle group, any muscle group, you'll build definition by forcing more blood through the muscle and teaching it to retain more muscle glycogen. However, you won't build the necessary size you need to make that shape and definition really stand out; ergo you will most likely end up with chicken calves. As to the concerns regarding undue spinal pressure from high weight, I'm wondering if either the stance of these individuals is too wide, or they are either rounding out their backs, or, conversely, hyper-extending their backs. I'm not saying this is the case, but from personal experience, as well as the input of others, I've never had an issue moving high weight with this exercise with any negative repercussions. It also may have to do with their height and shoulder width. Cheers :)-See Less

That was the "bright red flashing light" that motivated me to seek out other ways to develop my calves. I like machine donkey calf raises better if I must use a machine, but frankly I prefer to do barbell or dumbbell work for my calves.-See Less

I found that I maxed out my gym's machine (around 400 lbs I think) rather quickly and that this placed enormous compressive force on my spine and back long before it was ready for it - at the time I barely squatted 200 for 5's. When it comes to calf exercises, this is like comparing leg press to squats in that it allows you to move unreasonably large weights due to favorable leverage.-See Less
