Perhaps better than the barbell shrug because the dumbbells allow you to hold the weight at your sides, rather than in front of your body. This allows your traps to perform the whole shrugging movement without excessive tension in the shoulders.

This is one of my favorites. I love dumbbell exercises like this one. Because the human body has a left and right side. Dumbbells allows each side to benefit from compound movements by forcing more balance as you move the weights through the air.

An excellent workout for the traps!!! Always the first exercise to do right after shoulders (both heavy and lite days) and back (lite and tone days only)!

i find that these are an amazing exercise if you have the wrist strengh to hold the weight.
PS: if you lean foward some you activate WAY more of your traps

I really like this exercise. In my experience, it has made a big impact on how my upper back has developed. My left shoulder has had problems when I've lifted too heavy so if you've never done this start out relatively light.

My experience not as great as a barbell shrug, but if its all you can do, and have no other option do it. Do not roll your shoulders at all, that isolates the front head, anterior delt, and the back head posterior delt of your shoulders. You want to isolate the top half of your trapezius using a straight up and down motion. It wont cause an injury unless you lift like a retard. For you big guys out there, use straps when doing this exercise. Increases the number of reps you can do in a set w/o your hands being torn up from the heavy weight. Gloces will not work for this if you go heavy.-See Less

Some people are tempted to roll their shoulders forward or backwards while doing this lift. However, this is very hard on your shoulder joints and may cause injury. Always lift straight up and straight down.

The Barbell Shrug is one of the best exercises to do even for beginners. You can easily vary the weight, depending on how much you want to lift. I tend to do this exercise each time I work the traps at the gym. Remember to have your chest out and your shoulders back. Once at the top hold for 3 seconds...+See More

My favorite trap excercise provided your gym has dumbells heavy enough for the user. I "out grew" the ones in my gym.
