How Did You Get Started?
I got started watching old muscle beach movies and idolizing Arnold, Zane, Reeves. I had a makeshift concrete weight set in my room and later in high school I had access to the high school gym, some understanding coaches even gave me a key! I never quit, even though I had very little education about what I was doing. At 35 I became a personal trainer and went to work where Branch Warren was head trainer. What an education! I trained with Branch for about a year and my knowledge and physique changed dramatically!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I do a four day routine, rep range is usually 10-12, but occasionally I will do dropsets or burnouts. I go as heavy as possible with good form. Abs I work in on upper body days 20 reps of varying exercises. I generally go pretty light first set, relatively heavy second set, all out max on third.
Sample Training Week:
Bench press (bar, smith machine or dumbbell)
Incline press (bar, Smith machine or dumbbell)
Cable crossovers low or high or pec deck, superset with pushups or dips
Standing barbell curl or alternating dumbbell curls
Hammer curls, cable EZ curl or preacher EZ curl, superset with seated or standing concentration curl
Deadlift(for 3 sets of 5)
Pullups (overhand wide grip) or pulldowns
One armed rows
Underhand grip pulldowns, close grip pulldowns or t-bar rows, superset with low rows
Shrugs (barbell, dumbbell, or smith) superset with
Seated laterals, reverse pec deck or bent over rows
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
My nutrition plan began shortly before my best results did! When I started I ate everything, and a lot of it! When I cleaned up my diet and started paying more attention to protein and calories, I got the results I was after. Generally I eat more carbs during the winter and less protein, during the summer I reverse this. Mostly because I try to compete during the summer. I try to get 1 to 1/2 grams of protein per pound of desired body weight. Probably 300 grams of carbs during the winter months, to 250 or 200 during the summer; depending on how close I am to contest. Recently I have been experimenting with fruit instead of starchy carbs (thanks to Dave Goodin!) and am having some good results with that.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I was never much of an athlete, I had a breathing problem as a child and still do. Bodybuilding has given me something I can do, helped my confidence, and kept me young!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
My wife Tiffany and I compete together, and it is great having someone to train for shows with. I would like to continue to compete, to motivate me to go that extra mile, and to be an example for the people who maybe weren't the best athletes, not to give up, but instead find something they CAN do!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
To be consistent, and make it a lifestyle. Bodybuilding is not a fad or weekend thing, it is a lifestyle thing.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Branch Warren, I have mentioned before, took my training to the next level and is a good friend; Dave Goodin, whom I recently have been consulting with on nutrition; and of course Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steve Reeves, & Tom Platz.
