How Did You Get Started?

I actually entertained the thought of bodybuilding when living in Pennsylvania, when I wanted to get into shape after having 2 children. I searched for a trainer and found Cindy, she was a bodybuilder. As she trained me I saw that my body responded very well to the training. I then became pregnant with Clint and stopped training. And never really returned to the gym. So busy with children and work I couldn't imagine attempting the gym again.

My 3 younger siblings were living with me as well and my husband had 3 children from a previous marriage. With 9 children every other weekend and 6 everyday of the week!!! No time for ME! I have since moved several times and when living in South Carolina I began running. I ran several 10k's, 5ks's and even a marathon. I did very well, but it was still not what I wanted to do as far as physical activities. I moved then to Savannah, GA and ran some more did 2 more marathons, some more 5k's and 10k's and even started cycling.

When I moved to Florida, I met a girl at work that knew I ran and she ran as well. In conversation I mentioned to her that I wanted to get back into bodybuilding but at a competitive level. She then told me a friend of hers was competing in a show in Lakeland, Florida. And that she trained at Deb's Gym in Lakeland. I felt chills all over; I want to meet Debbie Callahan. I just felt good about it right away. I went to the Lakeland Classic Bodybuilding show in 2004. And got the BUG! I contacted Deb and the rest is history. I now have a great trainer, and I can truly say a really good friend. That year her show was in June I believe and I began training with her and in October 2004 - I won my first show.

Since then my titles and placings have been: (this is what I was able to accomplish in just 11 months!)

  • 2004 Masters Florida State Bodybuilding Championships -NPC- women over 30 - heavyweight (1st Place)
  • 2005 Tampa Bay Classic Bodybuilding Champions - NPC - Women's Tampa bay open - heavyweight (1st Place)
  • 2005 Tampa Bay Classic Bodybuilding Champions - NPC - Women's Tampa bay open - (1st Place Overall Winner)
  • 2005 Mid-Florida Classic - NPC - Open Heavyweight (1st Place)

I took time off in 2006 from any shows, but continue to train and I am focusing on 3 shows in 2007 including Nationals.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

LOTS of stadium stairs!!!! Deb has taught me how to concentrate on the lift and to feel the muscle work. Also how to breathe and not think about the pain. In order to accomplish what I did in the little bit of time I trained very intensely. While I was putting on weight and defining my muscles I trained 1x per day 5 days a week. Consisted of 20 minutes on the bike and 1 hour or intense weight lifting training.

12 weeks out my training changed. I would run in the am before work, then after work bike 20 minutes weight train for a hour. On the two days that I had off I was now doing stadium stairs. Jog around track 2-3 times depending on how how it was outside. (Florida May -July in full SWEATS!!!!!) Then do stadiums and go up and down steps. Started out at 20 times up and worked my way up to 60 times up the steps. Then 100m jog with 100m walk for a total of 1 mile then do lunges up and down the football field!

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

    Breakfast: Protein, Veggie/simple carbs, Carbohydrate (ex. 1 cup oatmeal, 1 cup or 10 egg whites, 1/2 red apple)
    Snack: Protein, Veggie (ex. chicken breast, raw broccoli.)
    Lunch: Protein, Veggie/simple carb, carbohydrate (white fish, pasta, salad w/fat free dressing)
    Snack: Protein, Veggie (ex. chicken breast, asparagus)
    Dinner: Protein, Veggie, Carbohydrate (ex. chicken breast, backed potato, spinach)
    Snack: Protein, Veggie (ex. fish or egg whites, green beans)

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

Vitamins, minerals, glutamine, whey protein and aminos. You have to bee careful and make sure you seek medical advice when taking and mixing any kind of supplement products.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love the challenges and the mental test bodybuilding puts me through. I have gained a lot of confidence in myself and I know that I can pretty much do anything now that I put my mind too. I do believe that even though Bodybuilding is sport dominated by men, that women can gain a lot of personal self confidence. Don't be intimidated because you may see that the participants are mostly men.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

My plans are to obtain my qualifications to be a personal trainer so that I can motivate others to obtain self confidence and achieve there goals in physical fitness, whether it was weight loss, body toning, bodybuilding competitions. I would also like to obtain qualifications to be a NPC Judge. I am now training to compete at a National Qualifier and go to Nationals.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Go after your dreams. It is never too late. As they say on Nike "JUST DO IT!" Interview many trainers, and go with one that you are comfortable with that will truly listen to YOU! Don't just settle for one.

Stick to your diet. One thing that my husband told me (he is a long time runner and marathon runner) that you can weight train all you want but the diet is 80% of the battle. So do stick to your diet - It is most important.

When I do something, I give it my all and one lesson I had to learn, which was a rude awaking to me was to balance life. Training for a show can consume you, but you have to balance it all out (family, work, friends and training).

So just make sure that you remember life is a balancing act and everything must be put into perspective. Then when you are 10 weeks out it is your time to be selfish. And if you balance everything before your family and friends will loving be there for you and give you your space for your last 12-10 weeks out.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

There are two female bodybuilers that I have admired. Rachel McLish and Cory Everson. They are truly a class act in bodybuilding and have maintained the feminine look. They are both sexy and built at the same time. And when I train, that is one thing that is my TOP PRIORTY is to be fit and built, but very feminine at the SAME time.
