How Did You Get Started?

I first got started with martial arts because my dad is a black belt teacher in jujitsu, so I have been doing that from the age of 10 till my 16th and I also competed in martial arts. Once in a competition a guy came to me and told me that I had a good physical look and I should consider weight training, but at that time I wasn't interested... and now comes the fun part.

A year later my mother got a new boyfriend who was a Dutch champion bodybuilder. I never saw a bodybuilder up close, but when I saw him I was stunned! I could not believe his size! He looked like a giant! I really could not believe what I saw. Then he took me to the gym for my first chest workout. I can remember like it was yesterday! I was so excided! We started off with a press machine and after that we did incline dumbbell presses and fly's - the day after that training I could not move my arms (ha-ha). Any movement I did hurt like h-ll! I could not put gel in my hair or get my self a cup of tea, but at that moment I fell in love with bodybuilding.

After a year training me and a friend went to a bodybuilding competition, when we arrived at the competition we just sat down in the guest area and I could not believe my eyes! Everywhere I looked I saw guys with arms like tree trunks and backs like sail ships! I could not believe my eye's! And then the competition started - I was on the tip of my chair. First we had the masters followed by the junior's and then the weight classes... oh my god they where huge! Then I knew, right there, that I wanted to become like them, so after the show I was more motivated then ever!

My goal was to compete the year after so from that moment on it was all hardcore training and dieting! The following year I did the junior class of the hardcore classics show here in Holland. I was so nervous (ha-ha). I can remember sitting in the room and seeing all those monsters! I felt so little compared to them.

I was thinking of leaving (ha-ha) but then I walked into another room and I saw more guys of my size so I thought that would be the juniors. I had a lot of support and help from my trainer and coach who at the time was Willem Jonkman. He kept on telling me, "Don't stress or you will hold water!" (hahaha) How can you not stress at your first show, then it was time to get on stage. They oiled me up and I pumped a little with pushups and then we went.

When I walked on that stage my smile was beginning under my nose and ended at the back of my head (ha-ha)! I was so proud of myself. I only placed 3rd, but I was so happy and I knew that I wanted to live my life the bodybuilding way! After that I competed every year for the next 5 years. In 2005 I won the Dutch championships in the junior class and in 2006 I placed 2nd in the junior class, in 2007 I did my first competition in a weight class: the 85 kilo's and placed 3rd out of 6 competitors.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

In the offseason I only use free weights and try to go as heavy as I can. With every set I want to make at least 8 to 10 reps and I do something that most people don't. If my goal with a certain amount of weight is 10 and I can't manage to do it at once I just do as many reps I can then I put the weight down and count to ten and start again. I do that until I have my 10 or more reps. Here are some sample training schedules:

Contest Prep:

    Monday: chest + arms
    Tuesday: back + shoulders
    Wednesday: legs + abs
    Thursday: chest + arms
    Everyday: back + shoulders
    Saturday: legs + abs
    Sunday: off

    Off Season

    Monday: chest
    Tuesday: back
    Wednesday: arms
    Thursday: shoulders
    Everyday: legs front
    Saturday: hams and calves
Sunday: off or little cardio and calves or abs

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

My body reacts better on high protein and low carb diets, so in contest prep I try to get around 300 to 350 grams (chicken, fish, meat, or eggs) of protein and 200 gr of cabs (rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes) and after 6 o' clock I don't eat any more carbs.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I made the best gains, with the weight gainer of interactive nutrition, Mammoth! That stuff is potent! And every supplement of Universal, especially the Animal Pack combined with the Sterol Tablets from Universal.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love bodybuilding because of the magic it has, it's all in your hands. If you put your mind to it you will achieve your goal. If you're being lazy it shows! If you're being straight to your diet and training it shows! You see the result of hard training and dieting day in day out and it has also given me a great deal of self discipline. That also goes for the other things I do; like work and my private life. Bodybuilding has given me so much. From a great body to great discipline and most of all lots of fun. Fun is something everyone wants in their lives! It's just a great lifestyle and I would recommend it to everyone!

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I hope to compete in the NPC nationals and Musclemania and its my dream to become a very good athlete and photo model. I love to do shoots when I am in shape! It's also a dream for me to live in America and become a personal trainer there because I love to help people to achieve their goals and let them fall in love with the sport.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Never give up and stay consistent! If you want to achieve something then WORK FOR IT! Put your mind to it and go for it! Keep a good diet and go easy on yourself in the weekend. Train hard, do your cardio, change your schedule from time to time so your muscles don't get used to the same training day in day out, and remember... NEVER GIVE UP! Nobody told you it was going to be easy but at the end of the road is your goal and you will keep on taking that road to achieve that goal! Remember also: you don't know everything so listen to the people and their ideas; you're never to old to learn.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

My favorite bodybuilder is Stan Mcquay! I think he has it all, symmetry, hardness, style and he is a great looking guy, for me he is bodybuilding in every way. Also Melvin Anthony; he put himself out there with so much confidence and charisma. I just love to see him in action!
