How Did You Get Started?
I've been training seriously since college but even before then I often lifted at the gym. The thought of becoming a bodybuilder never occurred to me then, mainly because of the stereotype that bodybuilders are "muscle heads" (not true) and I was headed for Corporate America. After training consistently for several years and eating properly; in the summer of '98 I realized that I spend 5-6 days in the gym, I've always looked great but what's next? What's the reason for this dedication? I need to work towards something! So I started competing and won my first competition and another 3 months later. My next competition will be in two weeks!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
My workout routine differs when I'm training for a competition from off-season training. During the off-season, on Mondays I'll do shoulders and traps. Tuesdays-Biceps and triceps. Wed-I'll do back , Thursday I'll work on chest , Friday I'll rest, Saturday I'll do legs, Sunday-I'll do cardio or rest depending if I do it during the week. I try to use a different workout technique every couple weeks in order to work the muscle groups from different angles. I'll work abs after each sessions.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
For my first competition I decided that I will not take any supplements except for multi-vitamins. I wanted to prove to myself that I could do this without any enhancers. I did it, but that concept didn't last very long. I later learn that supplements really help you to train harder and replenish /repair those muscle tissues used up during training. Bodybuilding is no different than any other sport where the human anatomy is being extended to its full potential and need to be replenished. Now I use Cell-Tech products, Whey Protein, and Creatine. I also use Hydroxycut when I'm training for competitions.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I believe that I've developed a love for the sport by doing it! When I reflect on the advantages gained by being a bodybuilder its difficult not to love it. I could easily say that you get a lot of attention and compliments on how you look, but the main reason for me is the lifestyle. You will always be healthy because you're eating healthy. You will always be physically fit because you are exercising/working out! And this obviously transcends to your mental capacity.. How can you lose? How can you not appreciate this sport?
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I've set a short-term goal to be among the top five competitors at the National Team Universe. When this happens I'll make a decision regarding the top prize! I am also writing a book about bodybuilding; targeting amateur bodybuilders like myself. I would like to hear from you about your experiences which I'll incorporate in this book. I want this book to be a guide to amateur bodybuilder of all ages. It will be based on my experiences, my brother and other aspiring bodybuilders like yourself. Currently, I'm promoting a "Fitness Workshop" to be held in Jamaica this July. This is sponsored by Couples Jamaica and Swept Away Hotel. Flex Wheeler will be one of the participants among other bodybuilders. I want to promote other shows and workshops in the future.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Don't give up! I've met several gym buddies who came to me for help to get them prepared for a competition. They work and train hard but when it comes to dieting and the commitment most of them eventually back out. That's part of my motivation for writing this book. It doesn't have to be difficult. You can have a life and be competitive in this sport and I know a lot of egos and confidences were hurt because they weren't able to follow through.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
These include Flex Wheeler and Ronnie Coleman because I've met both of them and find them to be exceptional human beings who obviously work hard to achieve their goals and promote the sport. Mostly, I admire my brother, Errol. He is one of the most dedicated bodybuilders I know who taught me a lot about the sport. He also has the potential to be a contender for the Mr. Olympia title in the future!
