How Did You Get Started?

My passion for fitness started when I was a young girl. I've always loved fitness, playing sports and getting physical. While the other girls were wearing skirts and playing with their Barbie dolls, I was in athletic wear playing b-ball with the boys. I'm a bit of a tomboy at heart, but watch out because I know how to rock a skirt too.

I'm driven and committed to living life to the fullest. So if I'm not passionate about something, I'm changing it pronto. I'll never forget the day I was working as an Executive Assistant and finding myself staring out the window at the stunning shoreline of Vancouver, BC and hearing the voice inside my head asking me what I'm selling out for. Yikes...selling out? I had always had a passion for fitness, for training, for working hard. What happened? Well, I quit on the spot and got back on my path exploring my passion for fitness.

It wasn't long after that I met my friend Steve Colbert, personal trainer & former Pro Bodybuilder. His encouragement, along with Jennifer Nicole Lee's inspirational story, was my inspiration for taking my fitness career to the next level. And that meant committing myself fully to competing and becoming an elite personal trainer.

My first show was the Fitness America show in Vegas in Nov 2008. I worked my tail off, had tremendous breakdowns and learned a lot about what it takes to compete. I had no idea how expensive competing was because of the trainer, the supplements, the costumes/bikinis, it all really adds up. Well I didn't have any money for all that so I self trained, researched and created my own diet, and designed my own bikinis/costumes.

Then to add to my hurdles, my seamstress quit the week before the show, leaving me with no bikinis or costumes. Not to be thwarted, I learned to sew and made all 4 of my outfits. Well, all my hard work and determination paid off big time, I placed 7th (Top 10) in the Fitness America show in Las Vegas in Nov 2008.

I've now competed in 7 shows, and consistently placed top 3 or 5 in most of them. Not a bad start, eh? I love this stuff and am so thankful to be able to be a part of it. Here are my competition stats...

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

My workouts are anything but ordinary and I love pushing my limits. So I mix it up a lot. That means incorporating a lot of interval training and plyometrics. I also like getting out of the gym so I can have a healthy dose of other activities.

Day 1 - Back/Biceps:

Day 2 - Legs:

Day 3 - Rest:

Day 4 - Intervals/Abs:

Day 5 - Cardio/Plyometrics:

  • Treadmill: 30 minutes
  • Box Jumps: 1 set of 30 reps
  • Bench Lateral Jumps: 1 set of 30 reps
  • Bench Step-Ups: 1 set of 30 reps

Day 6 - Kick Boxing/Abs:

  • Bas Rutten Kick Boxing Routine: 30 minutes
  • V-Ups: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Crunches: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Reverse Crunches: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Bicycle: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Medicine Ball Twist: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Crunches: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Scissor Kicks: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute
  • Knee Tucks On Stability Ball: 1 set of as many reps as possible in 1 minute

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I love whey protein. I also love Neogenix Velocity and VPX Clenbutrx. These two fat burners are by far the strongest I've used. My cardio endurance is through the roof when I'm on these.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Simple. Better sex. Just kidding, well sort of. Being in shape dials me in physically, mentally and spiritually. You know that feeling you get when you feel totally connected and focused... that's what my whole day feels like after I train. My whole world opens up.

I also love, love, love to train my clients. Contribution is huge to me and there is nothing I enjoy more than training and inspiring my clients to live their dreams. I'm enamored with creating special programs that are customized to them kicking butt with their goals. And the best part is that they come in seeking a better body and leave with a stronger sense of confidence, accomplishment and focus. I could never give this up.

Fitness has truly been a rewarding force in my life and I'm very thankful for every day that I get to do something that I love so much.

Feeling sexy, fulfilled and alive. My healthy lifestyle empowers me to live a life I love.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

For me the most important thing is living a life I love. My goals are huge, but it's all about the journey not the destination. And I wake up every morning fired up at the path I chose. I love to train hard, come up with new training regimens, and learn about nutrition and holistic approaches to fitness, you name it.

I read everything I can get my hands on. My friends tease me about my appetite for this stuff (and my appetite... I can eat). I'm really passionate about it and wouldn't give it up for anything. Fitness allows me to live my potential. So watch out.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

To be humble, I'm after world domination. Well all joking aside, I want to build a multi-dimensional fitness empire that changes the world. And I'm driven to do it. I've made some great inroads in getting exposure online and featured in magazines, but I'm super excited about the future and ready to take my game to the next level on multiple fronts. I'm focused on getting more exposure in magazines and on websites.

I've always wanted to create my own fitness clothing line and am finalizing making this a reality with one of the hottest active wear companies, Public Myth Active Wear. I'd also like to make the transition from supplement user to supplement sponsored, but I'm super picky and will only partner with companies I truly believe have phenomenal products. I'd also like to get involved in creating DVDs, training products and up my game with training celebrities.

But one thing that I'm super excited about is my new online initiative www.TrainWithNyla.com. This site, which is not active yet, will allow me to bring my personalized approach to training to a global audience. www.TrainWithNyla.com will provide custom training programs that are 100% customized to individuals needs. It will take my holistic and goal oriented approach to fitness... including training, nutrition, accountability and the mental game (an area so often neglected in personal training). It's going to be amazing and it should launch in the next couple months, so stay tuned.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Persistence! Persistence is the number 1 thing you're going to need to succeed. Yes there's a ton of work and sweat. Yes you need to be disciplined and stay focused. But no matter what you do, there are going to be times you experience tremendous self-doubt.

Times when you plateau in your training, that your body doesn't want to go on, days that you don't want to train, days when the ice cream looks better than the gym. And let me tell you...when you break through those times of weakness and train with determination...that is when you rise to your greatest level.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Jennifer Nicole Lee, for her sex appeal and business acumen. Jennifer brings sexy to the fitness industry but at the same time is able to look wholesome and classy. I like her drive and ambition.

Ava Cowan, for her determination, dedication, knowledge and hard work ethics. Ava has one of the best physiques in the industry; her strong body is a reflection of how strong her mind is, which is something I aspire to.
