How Did You Get Started?

It was in October 2009, with the help of my wife, Carol, that I decided it was time to try to get back into reasonable shape. I really cleaned up my diet and began working out twice a day (5:30 am - 45 minutes of cardio and 7:30 pm - circuit weight training). I was determined to lose 30 lbs by 1/1/10.

During this time I also reconnected with my Catholic upbringing and rejoined the Church. A funny thing happened on my way to January 1, 2010. By December 10, 2009 I lost 40 lbs, and the muscle I thought I had lost over the years started to show. I joined Bodybuilding.com because I wanted to learn how to build muscle to replace the 40 lbs of fat I had lost.

My transformation to a true amateur body builder was complete on 5/15/10 when I entered the NANBF 2010 Great Northern Classic and won the Grand Masters Division Title. It was an incredible experience. I intend to continue competing in bodybuilding competitions. My itch to compete in body building originally started as more of a lark than anything else. I truthfully have been having a lot of fun with it. I am scheduled to compete in a contest in August with some serious competition. I am really thriving on the razor sharp focus needed to properly prepare.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I have mixed German Volume Training with HIIT. GVT has helped me blast through plateaus.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I have read Dr. Joel Fuhrman's book Eat to Live. I believe in his aggregate nutrient density index. However, his book is more about losing weight than it is about packing on muscle.

I am also a big fan of Tom Venuto and his book Burn the Fat Feed the Muscle. 6 properly balanced (depending if I am cutting or bulking) meals, a minimum of 1 Gallon of H2O per day, and carb cycling have made the biggest improvements in my physique. The healthy body is an amazing energy conversion machine that will work if given the opportunity.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I used to think golfers were the single best group of people. Now I believe bodybuilders are pound for pound the best group of people on earth. A fellow bodybuilder in a head to head competition would give you the shirt off his back. The brotherhood and sisterhood of bodybuilders is similar to the buddy system I experienced when I served with the 2/502nd Infantry 101st Airborne. Everyone has everyone's back. Every bodybuilder I've met is willing to extend a helping hand.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

It's incredibly rewarding to see that my efforts, my results and the things that motivate me have helped to inspire other people. I have been on a spiritual, emotional and physical journey of growth for the past 9 months. For me, the growth of my spiritual self helped me grow my emotional and physical dimensions. I've seen those bodybuilders that have faith in God grow better and grow bigger. Seeing people grow spiritually, emotionally and physically really inspires and motivates me!

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

Sheer determination. My childhood prepared me for all the hard work in the gym. I was raised in a dysfunctional family. I am blessed, and I was determined to navigate my way through a tough childhood. I am lucky to have a beautiful and loving wife and two great sons.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

Lead a healthy and God loving life. Schedule permitting, I will compete in as many Natural events as I can and for as long as I am able.

Acknowledge the creator, grow spiritually, and then grow physically.
