How Did You Get Started?

Unlike most figure competitors, I never participated in sports growing up. Simply put... I was too backward. After high school I joined the gym with my husband (then boyfriend), just to get in shape. Once I began lifting weights, I was amazed at the changes in my body, especially the added muscle. My husband eventually decided to start competing in 2001. I always supported him, but felt there was no way I could get on stage. Just the thought terrified me... all those people looking at me. Finally, after 15 years of training I decided to try and overcome my fear. Competing in figure has been a exciting journey, and the best is yet to come!

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I train on a five day split taking the weekend off except for cardio. I switch up the exercises each week so that my body does not adapt to one particular workout. My body seems to respond well to this, and I make better gains. When I started working out I would do a program of 3-4 exercises of 10-12 reps. Then I started working with Mike Davies. He has me doing 6-8 non-traditional exercises for each body part of 15-20 reps each. This has made such a change in my physique. I also do 15 minutes of abs after each workout 3-4 days a week. I do a 45-60 minute cardio session twice a day 5-6 days a week pre-contest. I switch that up from treadmill programs, Precor, and Stairmaster to running bleachers. My workout is split as follows:

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I eat high protein meals with low carbs and low fat. My choices of lean protein are chicken, talapia, egg whites, and tuna. I try to eat 25-30 grams for each meal. I eat 6-7 small meals a day with two of those meals having carbs. My first meal of the day and my post-workout meal both contain complex carbs such as oatmeal, cream of rice, or yams. Throughout the day, I have more fibrous carbs like salad, asparagus, green beans, or broccoli. I must be careful not to consume too many carbs as they will easily turn to fat if not used up.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

Protein is the most important to build and maintain muscle. I like Champion Pure Whey in cookies & cream flavor. I take glutamine to help in recovery and maintenance of muscle tissue. BCAAs are essential to aid in muscle growth. Animal Paks are full of vitamins, minerals, and aminos. Lipo 6 is good to help burn fat.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love living a healthy lifestyle and being in control of my physique. Seeing the changes that my body goes through in preparation for a contest is amazing. It all depends on how you fuel your body. Being fit gives me strength and confidence that I did not have before. I hope to be an example and help others along the way.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

Of course, my ultimate goal would be to turn pro. For now, I will be realistic and say that I hope to place in the top five at a national level show in my upcoming season. In the meantime, I will sit back and enjoy the ride. I am having so much fun along the way and hope to be able to do some fitness modeling in the future.
