How Did You Get Started?
I started gymnastics when I was 3 years old, and was hooked instantly. I loved competing, and pushing myself mentally and physically everyday! I achieved my dream of earning a full ride scholarship to a Division I school, San Jose State. It was something I worked my whole life to accomplish. Being a college athlete is one of the greatest experiences I have had, and it created so many memories for me! I was on the team that won the MPSF Conference championship for the first time in school history, and I was also team captain for 2 years. But, all things must come to an end, and 4 years later, here I am.
When I graduated and moved back home, I needed a place to workout. I had done gymnastics for about 18 years, and with that absence in my life, I needed something to gear my energy and competitive spirit towards! I went to Rock Fitness, and found one of the top bodybuilding and fitness gyms in the nation, right in my home town! The first day I went in, the owner (and now my trainer, Mason Stanfield) said I had good legs, and I should try fitness! I figured it would be a good way to stay in shape while continuing to play around with gymnastics.
I began training in July/August and loved every second of it! My first show was in November, and I got 2nd place in figure. My fitness debut was in December, and I took 1st place! All the hard work had paid off!! This has been life changing for me; I can't imagine my life without fitness. It's the perfect way for me to maintain my athletic and competitive mentality that I've had since I was a little girl.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I workout 5 days on, then take 2 days off for rest/recovery. My workout plan constantly changes, and is geared towards what needs the most work. Typically Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays are for upper body. I do a lot of pullups for my back, and a lot of shoulder work! Tuesdays and Thursdays are for lower body. I alternate between squats and deadlift, and do a lot of lunges and glute work as well. I love working abs, and usually do some sort of ab work everyday.
When I have a show coming up I'll do cardio 7 days a week, and twice a day as needed. Off-contest I do at least 3 days of cardio, usually first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. I like to switch up my exercises so I don't dread my time in the cardio room!! I'm looking forward to the summer so I can do more outside. I love going to the lake, hiking, or running outside!
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
My contest diet is pretty monotonous, which makes it easier for me to stick with it! I start my first meal at 5am, and eat every 3 hours.
- Meal 1: 4 egg whites with vegetables (broccoli, mushrooms, etc) & 1 packet sugar free oatmeal
- Meal 2: 4-6 ounces turkey breast, romaine salad w/ mixed veggies, 1/3 sweet potato
- Meal 3: Protein shake, 1 apple
- Meal 4: Protein shake, rice cake w/ natural almond butter
- Meal 5: Tilapia/Chicken/Turkey (4-6 ounces) and 6 ounces vegetables (asparagus, green beans, etc)
- Meal 6: Again, 4-6 ounces of lean meat and about 6 ounces of veggies
I substitute different meats and vegetables for a little variety. I have a pretty bad sweet tooth so I use sugar-free jello to try to curb my cravings!! I stick to this diet pretty much all year. Off-contest I'll be a little more lenient, and allow myself pizza every now and then (with whole wheat crust of course!).
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I get such a great pump from BSN's NO Xplode! That has been the best supplement I have used as far as muscle/strength gains.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
It has always been important to me to live a healthy lifestyle. Fitness is the backbone of who I am. Most people don't understand, or aren't willing to make, the sacrifices that come along with this sport. It is such a challenge, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I love pushing myself to the limit, and seeing the results after all my hard work! Being able to compete and show off all my hard work is just icing on the cake!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
The next step is to go for my pro-card! This year I plan on competing at Jr. Nationals, and probably Nationals as well. I would love to be able to be a role model for others who want to get into fitness. Ultimately, I would love to work for a supplement company, or fitness magazine doing promotional work.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Hard-work and consistency are key!! If you work hard and are consistent, in AND OUT of the gym, it will definitely pay off!! Keep your eye on the prize! The sacrifices are well worth it!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I have respect for anyone who can do the sport! I really like Kim Klein, and I think Deana Lee's routines are awesome!
