How Did You Get Started?
I started out working at the front desk of a small gym in my hometown when I was about 18. I became friends with a personal trainer there and I quickly fell in love with fitness. I spent my time in the gym while my friends were hanging out in the bars around town! I enjoy the changes I see in my physique - it's addictive. I then started work at a larger fitness center as a personal trainer where I met my fiancé. He convinced me to do my first competition in which he actually proposed to me at the show (on stage!). I became hooked.
In 2004 I entered 3 local shows in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama in which I did really well. I entered the Louisiana Figure Championships this year and once again did very well. So I decided to try my luck on the national level in New York August, 2005 and made it into the top 10 in my division (barely).
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
My workouts change every 4-6 weeks. I get bored if I stick with any one routine too long. I enjoy doing quick-paced circuit type workouts. I do a lot of supersets and typically pyramid my weights. Cardio has never been my favorite so I do just enough to keep my body fat at a comfortable percentage (until competition time).
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I follow a very strict diet for competition. I eat very little fat and more protein than normal. However, during the rest of the year, I simply balance each of my meals with the appropriate percentages of protein, carbs, and fat and eat 5-6 meals per day. During the off season, I eat out at least twice a week (Italian food is my favorite). I don't believe in depriving myself!
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
The only supplements I take regularly are protein shakes (usually Isopure), creatine, and a multi-vitamin. The protein shakes are a huge help - without them, I would not be able to meet my daily protein requirements.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Fitness has given me something that I was lacking before I got involved - DISCIPLNE! As a personal trainer, I feel that I need to stay fit and set goals for myself in order to inspire my clients to do the same.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
As I mentioned, I just competed in my very first national figure competition in New York. I plan to train hard and compete next year with an improved physique. I'll see how I do and go from there.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Always try to maintain a positive attitude. Fitness is something you should participate in because you love it, not because you want a trophy.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I had the opportunity to meet Jay Cutler at a show that I did in Biloxi, Mississippi. He has and incredible physique and he always has a smile.
I also admire Jenny Lynn - anyone who can win the Arnold Classic three times is pretty impressive! I got to meet her at a show in Louisiana and she seems to be sincerely nice.
