Amateur Fitness Competitor of the Week: Jennifer De Joya! - Pics and info and more!

How Did You Get Started?

I started my fitness career as an Aerobics Instructor 11 years ago. I got to a point where I wanted to take my fitness career to the next level and that's when I saw the Fitness America Pageant on ESPN. I thought those women looked great, they were strong and had great physiques and I wanted to be like them.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I do cardio 6-7 days per week for about an hour each time. I do weight training 3 days on and 1 day off for pre-contest:

  • Day 1: Back and chest/60 min. cardio
  • Day 2: Shoulders and arms/60 min. cardio
  • Day 3: Legs/60 min. cardio
  • Day 4: 60 min. cardio

Then start the cycle again.

For off season, I cut the cardio to 30-45 minutes a day, but keep the same weight training routine with higher weight and less reps.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I have to diet very strictly and I find that fish and egg whites are my best sources of protein in my lean down phase. My pre-contest diet includes:

  • Meal 1: 5-egg whites and 1 C. oatmeal
  • Meal 2: Whey protein shake and teaspoon of peanut butter or EFA supplement
  • Meal 3: 1 can of tuna and ½ sweet potato
  • Meal 4: Whey protein shake and EFA supplement
  • Meal 5: 4-6 oz of fish with 1 C. green vegetable

My off-season diet is about the same, but for Meal #2, I may take a Meal Replacement Shake or Protein Bar. Meal #5 may include chicken instead of fish.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

No2 and Creatine for strength gains, and Thermo Hydroxadrine for fat burning.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I see fitness as a great stress reliever and it has done wonders for my physique. I became an aerobics instructor to share these same rewards with others.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I would like to be on the cover of a fitness magazine and win a Regional and National Level Figure Competition.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

No one out there is any better or smarter than you are, and the most important thing in life is determination and persistence. When things in life get tough, training for competition will keep you focused on a goal and everything else will fall into place.

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

My favorite former bodybuilding athlete is Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has taken his career to the ultimate level by applying his commitment to the sport to other areas in life. He is a prime example of what we all can do if we set our mind to it. My favorite fitness competitor is Susie Curry. I think she is very talented strong and always has a great smile.
