How Did You Get Started?
As a kid, I was a tomboy and played on an all-girls baseball (not softball) team and we played at Williamsport, PA against the Little League World Series winners. I was a runner for many years and the aerobic queen - I had to do 3 classes in a row to tire me out!
I started using the machines at the gym I belonged to and the manager would come up to me and say - why don't you slow everything down and squeeze the muscle (I was in and out of the gym in 20 minutes with a full workout)! So, I began to think about what he said and started reading magazines about working out and thought maybe he had something there!
A light bulb went off in my head! I started training with a woman personal trainer who trained 5 people at a time and learned awesome exercises from her that I still include in many of my abs and sculpting classes to this day! I joined another gym and met a personal trainer who told me I should do contests and I said I was too shy, etc etc. He introduced me to heavy weights with various exercises and pushed me to the limit every time I worked out with him.
My body started to change dramatically and I got compliments wherever I was, be it in the grocery store, mall, church, etc etc.! I was thrilled to say the least because I was so shy and had a self esteem problem! To my surprise, I went to an audition for QVC (shopping channel nearby) at my gym and out of many people (mostly younger) I was the only one picked!
My career as a fitness model on QVC lasted about 3 years until I moved to Florida in late 1999! I met a trainer who is a bodybuilder at my gym in Florida and trained with him. I thought I had been pushed to the limit but I was pleasantly surprised at how much more I could be pushed and what changes I could make!
In 2002, another trainer noticed me in the gym and said I should do the local contest that was in 3 weeks! I said... what? I don't know how to pose; I don't know how to put a routine together and I am pretty shy! He was a great nutritionist and said he would dial me in! I was flabbergasted when I was awarded the trophy for the middleweight division (against 20 and 30 year olds) and was awarded the trophy for the overall winner.
I was on a roll. A few months later I came in 2nd in the Florida State Championships in West Palm Beach, Florida. I went on to the Nationals in Dallas that year but was not in the top 15! I went back to the drawing board and entered the 2003 Masters Nationals in Pittsburgh, PA and won the overall over 50! That was one of the thrills of my life... to say the least! Last year I won my division in Orlando, Florida at a Division 5 contest against 20 and 30 year olds! I am going to be the guest poser at a show in Savannah, Georgia this summer!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I tackle my legs (hams and quads and glutes) on Monday and also include back! Tuesdays, I work bis and tris, Wednesdays I work chest and Thursday I touch on legs again and annihilate my shoulders and rear delts!
Also on Mondays, I teach a half hour abs class, followed by an hour of body sculpting with weights, balls, bands, etc. Then I go to a spinning class.
Wednesdays I teach abs and sculpting again followed by a hi-low aerobics class. Fridays I do inner-outer thighs and take an hour kickboxing class. I also rollerblade some days and walk 40 minutes 4 times a week!
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I try to eat 6 meals a day with good carbs at my first 3 meals, 1-2 protein drinks a day, a ton of water. Sometimes I eat a low carb, low sugar protein bar for a snack! Since I have a bad sweet tooth, I indulge in cakes, pies, candy, cookies once a week and enjoy every bite!
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Boy, at my age, it's the greatest feeling in the world to get on stage with people 30 or more years younger than you and feel like I look as good as they do. Especially when I could be their grandmother and I am going to beat the pants (posing suits) off them!
I love bodybuilding for the competition, self-esteem boost and the overall feeling of being healthy, fit, and admired by everyone old and young!
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
When I am 60, I may go back and compete in the over 50 Master's Nationals! Since, women in the over 50 class do not get their pro cards, I do not see any sense in competing every year!
This year they just passed a rule that women can get their pro card if they win the over 35 class so that will be a goal I can work on achieving!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
As I said to a new bodybuilder who is getting ready for a future show the other day in the locker room, "you have to work hard and diet hard to the best of your ability and you have to constantly picture yourself on that stage winning first place!"
You have to go to the show knowing that you will win the show - if you have doubts then you shouldn't be going! You have to think "I have done the best that I can do with my body and that is all I can" - whether the judges think so or not because bodybuilding is so political! My ultimate goal would be to appear on the cover of a muscle magazine, etc. with a guy on my shoulders - ha ha!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Dexter Jackson is by far my most favorite bodybuilder - he belongs to the World Gym where I go and I always see him! He is a hard worker and most of all stays lean even in the off-season - I can't stand bodybuilders who get fat in the off season - I stay lean all year round!
Not only is Dexter a winner, but he is down to earth and a great guy! He always takes the time to talk to me at the gym and always tells me that he wants to look like me when he grows up! Haaa!
