How Did You Get Started?
I taught P.E. for a couple of years and when I stopped teaching I needed a way to stay in shape. I started training in the gym with my husband and was asked to help out at our local bodybuilding and figure show. I watched these women compete in figure and loved that look. I'd always been thin, but never had much muscle.
In the weeks after that show, I decided that I wanted to get up on that stage too. I began to train for my first show and 13 weeks later won 1st place in the Tall Class at the Battle of Biloxi in July 2007. After that first show I was hooked and decided to get back in the gym and start shaping my body even more.
I started with Shannon Dey's Team Bombshell in January of this year and had my first contest of the year in April. With the help of her training and nutrition I competed in our local contest (the show that I had worked the year before) and won the Overall Figure champion along with 2 other first place trophies.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
- Monday: Quads
- Tuesday: Shoulder, Triceps
- Wednesdays: Hams
- Thursday: Back, Biceps
- Friday: Chest, Glutes
- Saturday: Rest
- Sunday: Rest
I do plyometrics on Fridays also, it help to really shape my legs and glutes and gives me that extra cardiovascular boost for the weekend.
My abs workout consists of 3 days a week with 2 days being high rep, no weight and the middle day weighted low rep workouts.
When in contest preparation I do cardio 5-6 days a week for about 20-30 minutes. I have a very high metabolism and too much cardio is not beneficial for me. My favorite cardio equipment is the Summit Climber. It also helps me to strengthen my legs which are my weakest body part. Off season cardio is very sporadic for me. I usually try to get about 3 days a week for 30 minutes in when I can.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I have been with Shannon Dey's Team Bombshell for almost a year now. Since having her do my nutrition my body has changed drastically. I eat 7-8 meals a day with lots of veggies and a small amount of carbs with each meal. Every contest prep diet has been completely different and I never get bored with what I'm eating.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Tight Curves Protein: It is the best tasting protein I've found and is designed just for women. Helps me maintain my diet and stabilizes my mood at the same time.
Venom Lean Dreams: When competing I take this at night and am able to get restful sleep while maintaining the fat burn I want.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love fitness because it gives me daily motivation to stay fit and healthy. Competing allows me to continually challenge myself and to push my body to new levels with each contest. The nutritional knowledge and eating habits that I have learned I can pass on to my children and hope that they will lead healthy fit lives along with me. My teenager is now looking to start competing on the teen level and it will give us something to share together every day.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I am currently training for the NPC Nationals in Atlanta in November and am about 7 weeks away. I hope to do show well in the competition and then enjoy a few months of an off-season before beginning next year's contest prep. During the off season I will be in the gym working to shape my legs even more and work on my back to make my "V" taper better.
I was recently selected to be a part of Team Tight Curves and Bodywell Nutrition. Tom Richardson and Jimmy Mentis and the rest of their organization have many plans in the works to help women of all fitness levels and children set and maintain goals of good health and fitness. It is an honor to be chosen to help out and help others.
I have also set that goal of obtaining an IFBB Pro Card and will work hard to see the changes in my body that I need to get there.
This past year has been an amazing one for me and I hope that it is just the start of something great for me in the fitness world.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
The first tip I would give other fitness competitors would be to HAVE FUN! This is a sport that takes daily dedication and if you aren't having fun then you shouldn't be doing it.
Also, create a good support system. Have people around you that you can talk to on those days that the diet seems like it will never end, or when you're feeling that you just can't lift another day. Supportive and uplifting friends and family can make all the difference.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
I also love Shannon Dey. She not only is a great competitor, but helps so many girls become better competitors too. Through Team Bombshell she shows girls that this sport can be self esteem boosting and fun all at the same time.
