Our Amateur Bodybuilder of the Week was...
How Did You Get Started?
When I was 12 I took an interest in weightlifting just to be strong and fit. I did train hard but didn't have the knowledge to make proper gains. Through the years I have gained so much knowledge and last year while in Australia for 6 months I decided to enter my first contest. It is amazing how competition brings out the best in people, as I have never put as much effort in to anything in my life. I won my first show, the N.S.W Titles, and qualified for the Australian titles 2 weeks after and I won, becoming Mr Junior Australia. I then set my sights on the World natural titles in England on December 11th. I trained and dieted very hard but feel I lost too much size coming in at a shredded 187lbs. I was placed 3rd which I was still pleased with as the competition was much tougher. I have improved a lot since then putting on 10lbs of muscle and and learning so much more all the time about training and contest preparation. This year I have won all 3 shows I have entered, winning 2 Irish national junior titles and the Mr Junior ANB Yorkshire in England. What a good start to the year!!
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I have tried a lot of different methods of training over the years and have learned what works best for maximum results. Before you even enter the gym you have to have the right mindset. This is the most important aspect of your training. You must be very focused and prepared to put yourself through some real tough training, knowing that you will come off better for it. In the gym I train 4 days a week on Mondays training legs, Tuesdays chest and calves, Thursdays back and abs and Saturdays, shoulders, arms and calves. I work out for no more than 1 hour using 6-8 sets for large bodyparts and 3-5 sets for smaller bodyparts. I focus on using maximum overload for 4-6 reps at failure, always striving to increase either weight or beat my previous week's reps.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
My use of supplementation depends on what I can afford but I have found the following supplements useful building muscle and contest preparation: AST VP2 Whey Isolate for quality muscle gain, AST Micronized Creatine for strength and cell volumization, Prolabs Therma Pro for pre workout stimulation especially when dieting, Prolab Glutamine to protect against muscle loss while on a low carb diet and vanadyl sulfate and Maximuscle's Maxorol for increased fullness and hardness before a contest. My diet is very strict pre-contest with a big emphasis on protein, eating 350-400gms a day. I taper my carbs so late afternoon I eat none. I make sure I eat about 50gms of quality fats like olive oil, brazil nuts etc a day which I feel have helped me retain muscle and get even more cut before a contest.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
Because of the awesome challenge it gives me - and the sense of accomplishment I get from winning is unbeatable! There is no better feeling than after you have done a really hard workout and owning a fit and healthy body.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
For this year I plan on winning the ANB Mr Junior Britian in October then to win the Musclemania Junior world title in California in November. In the long term I plan on becoming the world's best natural bodybuilder and run my own gym teaching other people how to achieve their best potential also. I don't set myself any limits to what I can acheive!
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
