How Did You Get Started?

I started bodybuilding at the tender age of 16, but I began lifting weights shortly before I tried out for the 8th grade football team, at the time I was in the 7th grade. I put on some size during my athletic years in junior high and high school. I broke my junior high school's push up record in the 9th grade completing 427 consecutive push-ups. I was also named the strongest person on the football team pound for pound. My junior high school did not have a powerlifting team. My coach wanted me to contact another strength coach from a neighboring parish. He said that I really had potential as a lifter. I was interested but as a 14-15 year-old kid I knew that getting there (to practice) would be a problem. I never even took the issue up with my parents. I was training at a local health club during the off-season from track & football. I met a bodybuilder there and he encouraged me to do my first show. Encouraged was about it though I pretty much dieted and trained myself for my first show. I had a little help from him for my second show via a GURU Marris Lee. It was then that I met Marris and we have been working on my physique ever since.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I would like to think that the plan that I use now is the best. Though I have tried just about everything. I was on a lifting program for football and track in my school years. I also did a bodybuilding routine in school. I went to college and powerlifted for one year in attempt to thicken and dense my muscle fibers. That was a brutal year of training. Now I have combined some Author Jones and Dr. Fred Hatfield principles with some of my own theories.

My partner and I find that it really shocks and stimulates the muscle. I train 35-50 minutes five days a week. We use a holistic approach and keep our intensity super high. The routine goes as follows: Monday = Quadriceps, Tuesday = Back/Traps, Wednesday = Chest/Shoulders, Thursday = Hamstrings/Calves, Friday = Biceps/Triceps/Forearms. I perform about six intense sets using three different exercises for large muscle groups. I use about four intense sets with two to three different exercises for the smaller groups. Every other week we use the holistic training theory and do two holistic sets for the entire workout. This theory of training is a non-stop; exhaust the muscle to the bone system. It consists of four exercises and about 60 total nonstop reps each set. On the other weeks we use Author Jones's principals. We focus on exhausting the muscle on every set, squeezing and flexing through every rep. We go to true muscle failure.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I do not think that I use a whole lot of supplements. I have a few staples and now and then I try something new. I take 20 grams of German creatine monohydrate every day. I do cycle down before a contest to get a bone-dry appearance. I also take 8 grams of L-glutamine daily. This is a great muscle insurance policy. I always hit 2-4 grams after my workouts. In the off-season I use whey protein as a backbone tool to keep the muscle fully saturated with amino acids. In the competition season I use soy (SUPRO) as my replacement backbone. Whey is a dairy product and I cycle off of this as well to get super dry. I do take ephedra-based products on occasion. I am very careful with this product and use it as a weapon on the days when the diet is really pulling on me. This is not a year round supplement for me. I also take a daily multivitamin and the antioxidants A, E, & C daily.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Bodybuilding is the greatest sport ever. You know in bodybuilding you really find out how strong of a person you are. When you are digging deep inside of your heart to accomplish something that you really want it is just a beautiful feeling. I love the fact that it cannot be bought and it must be earned. I get so close to myself when I am in the lone tunnel vision process of training for a competition. It is wild just knowing that I am doing the impossible. Most people could never endure what bodybuilders go through. Tell any other athlete that they need to wake up in the middle of the night to eat and assure the muscle is being fed and see what happens. The sport has also given me confidence in myself and has only made me a stringer more mature being. I have learned so much (educational wise) by researching on how to make the muscles grow. I amaze people when they talk to me. I love the fact that people trust my knowledge enough to confide in me with their personal and bodybuilding related questions. Mostly I like the look of a bodybuilder. I think that it is awesome to be able to turn heads and have people say to themselves "damn that dude is bad". I think the bodybuilder look is awesome and baroque like. I knew at a young age that that was how I was going to build my body when I was an adult.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I will do a regional show, "The Southern Classic" in Jackson Mississippi on June 1st 2002. That will be my first show this year. I will then move on to make my national debut at the "2002 Collegiate Nationals" in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on July 19th & 20th. This will be a big step for me but it is time. Because I will be graduating soon it may be my first and last shot at the Collegiate Nationals. I am shooting to win my class and get a photo shoot with Muscle & Fitness. That magazine usually does a spread on the collegiate athletes. Hopefully I bring a look that is appealing and I get chosen for a photo shoot. This would put my name on the bodybuilding map. My ultimate future plans are to turn professional under the sanction of the reputable International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) by the youthful age of thirty. That gives me about four more solid years of packing on mass. I will do a number of shows on my journey to receiving my IFBB Pro Card. With bodybuilding's' acceptance into the Olympics the Team Universe is definitely in the back of my head. Representing the USA as the bantamweight at the Olympics, wow!

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

I hate using an old cliché but when the going gets tough-- you better get going! It is still so surprising to me but at times I feel like everything is moving in the wrong direction. I get this super power it comes out of nowhere (probably my heart) to stick it out and stay with my plan. The next thing you know the weight of the world is lifted and everything is ok. When I am dieting for a show my muscles get depleted and I feel like I am shrinking. That is when someone will approach me in the gym and say something like "man you look so much better than last year, your legs really grew a lot". Those little comments, determination to be that hardest working competitor, my training partner and the mirror keep me on track. Your friends, family, fans, and the self-efficacy that you have is what at times saves you from disaster. You have to treat bodybuilding like a gut wrenching endurance race. It is a long-term sport. A fellow bodybuilder once said, "you can't turn pro in two years". That is a true statement therefore; consistency, experimentation, willpower, passion and drive for the glory of the sport must be present always. It is a sport of sacrifice once you slip you cannot erase your mistake. Do not veer from your plan for success no matter what. If you are serious about bodybuilding you must live for the sport. (Eat it, Sleep it, Dream it, Visualize it, Be it, and Support it!)

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Skip LaCour is by far my favorite bodybuilder. As IFBB Pro King Kamali once told me in an e-mail "he has done many great things for the sport". This is true he has inspired me to be where I am today and I will always credit him. His publications and website e-newsletters are extremely helpful and inspirational. I relate to him heavily because we are both 100% natural bodybuilders demanding recognition in our sport. No one can take my sport away from me or tell me that I cannot be great at it because I choose not to use drugs. I view this not as a set back, only as a gift. Living our bodybuilding lifestyle makes us cherish our accomplishments even more.
