How Did You Get Started?

I've been training with weights for approximately 22 years and also have previously competed in gymnastics. In 1987 I began competing in bodybuilding, in the Lightweight class, and did very well: earning first and second placings up to 1990. Then I took a long hiatus from the sport: attending school, becoming a registered nurse, working as a personal trainer, getting married, and having a child. Now I am single mom.

I think turning back to weights and competition was a search for strength during the rough times in my personal life. I quickly regained the fit form I once had and again began winning, only now in Figure competitions. Today I am muscular but still feel very pretty and feminine... as a woman should feel.

When I train, it's a passion, not work. I enjoy training because it makes me feel young -- especially at age 45.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

Well off season I am a busy lady. I try to eat clean during the week and enjoy my weekends. Fitness is my passion but my priority is spending quality time with my son and my career as a Registered Nurse. Preparing for a competition is exhilarating and a great accomplishment. Competing in the late 80's as a lightweight bodybuilder has taught me great discipline as an athlete.

For the past 22 years my trainer has been Laura Binetti. The knowledge I've gained from Laura is incredible. She has been a great inspiration and has taught me the discipline and drive it takes to be a top athlete in both bodybuilding and figure competitions.

Contest Prep: Workout Program - I have a 16 week program. Use of equipment/sets/reps vary every week - always shocking the muscles - the results are fabulous.

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

I will start preparing for a competition 20 weeks out - starting out with approx 1800 clean calories. Once I reached a certain weight and certain look I will start adding cheat days... just love those cheat days and the rest is history.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love fitness because I am an athlete and nothing less. Competition has given me great experience and knowledge in becoming the best I can be as an athlete.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

It would be great if there were some consistency in the judging of Figure competitions. In Canada at the national-level, judges look for more size, muscularity, and hardness. (Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against a muscular physique; after all, I formerly competed as a bodybuilder and enjoyed it tremendously.) The problem is we have to place in Top 3 at the Canadian Fitness/Figure Nationals in order to qualify competing at the IFBB North Americans Championships.

The size and muscularity we have to build for the Nationals in Canada are not accepted by judges in the US; therefore, we have to tremendously tone down our size and hardness for the North Americans or other US competitions. In time, I hope consistency will prevail so as not to lead any Canadian Figure competitors to discontinue with competing at the national level in Canada.

I've been struggling over which 2007 competition I will enter. Well, I finally decided I will compete at the Canadian Natural World Qualifier instead of the Canadian Nationals. The Natural World Qualifier also qualifies Canadians for the North Americans. But you never know - maybe I'll change my mind and jump on that stage at the 2007 CBBF Canadian Fitness/Figure Nationals in Edmonton. My ultimate goal is to earn my Pro card as a Masters competitor.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Competition has always given me great confidence and self-esteem to pursue other challenges in my life. It also has helped me surmount the struggles in my life. Remember, it is never too late to start a fitness program or competition. I challenge all the young and especially those over 40.
