How Did You Get Started?
My love for fitness began two years ago when I attended a regional bodybuilding show (a CBBF qualifier, The BCABBA Northern Classic) to watch my mother compete in her first figure competition at age 48! I was skinny with little to no muscle, had poor eating habits and smoked a 1/2 pack a day; I decided enough was enough and I needed to change my lifestyle. I hired a personal trainer, quit smoking, learned about "clean eating" and trained for one full year before entering into my first figure show in June 2008.
Within the past three years I have competed in three fitness competitions; at the BCABBA Northern Classic I placed 1st out of 9 other competitors in the Figure Tall division, and at the WBFF BC Championships in April 2009 I made the top 15 out of 32 other beautiful ladies in the Diva Fitness Model category. I had such an amazing experience with the WBFF that I could not wait a whole year to do another show which was my original plan, and I registered for the Alberta Championships July 4th where I took home a 5th place finish out of 52 other competitors! Even though I did not win my Pro Card at the WBFF Alberta show I was given an amazing opportunity to be published in Inside Fitness Magazine as their "Female Form" in the October/November issue.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
I lift weights 5 times per week, 2 legs days, 2 back and chest then arms and shoulders. I also do 6 days of cardio, 3-60 minute low intensity and 3 high intensity interval sessions. As I get closer to a shoot or competition I will add in a second cardio a day.
Here is a sample of one of my weeks:
Day 1 - Back/Chest:
Bench Press: 3 sets of 5 reps
Reverse Pull-ups: 3 sets of 12 reps
Smith Machine Incline Press: 3 sets of 20 reps
Barbell Bent Over Rows: 3 sets of 20 reps
Dumbbell Flyes: 3 sets of 20 reps
Single Arm Rows: 3 sets of 20 reps
Day 2 - Biceps/Triceps/Shoulders:
Barbell Bicep Curls: 3 sets of 20 reps
Bench Dips: 3 sets of 25 reps
Barbell Shoulder Press: 3 sets of 15 reps
Alternating Dumbbell Bicep Curl: 3 sets of 20 reps
Skull Crushers: 3 sets of 20 reps
Bent Over Flyes: 3 sets of 20 reps
Day 3 - Legs:
- Giant Set:
Hamstring Curl: 3 sets of 20 reps
Straight Leg Deadlift: 3 sets of 20 reps
Calve Raises: 3 sets of 20 reps
Leg Press: 3 sets of 20 reps
Squats: 3 sets of 20 reps
Standing Lunges: 3 sets of 20 reps
Leg Extensions: 3 sets of 20 reps
I train abs 5 times per week as well. I will take 3 or 4 exercises and do 1 set of each until failure.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
I eat 6 meals a day, spaced out about 2.5-3 hours apart. A typical "competition season" day would look like this:
Meal 1 - 6 AM:
Meal 2 - 9 AM:
Meal 3 - 11:30 AM:
Meal 4 - 2:30 PM:
Meal 5 - 5:00 PM:
Meal 6 - 8 PM:
When I am in my offseason I will add more carbohydrates and low-fat dairy into my diet.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
I have been using an unbelievable new fat burner called Ripped Freak. My morning cardio sessions are a breeze; I have so much energy after I take it I feel like I could run for hours! I highly recommend Ripped Freak for anybody that's looking to maximize fat loss and increase energy levels! I also take Omega 3-6-9's with each meal, BCAAs 3x per day, creatine, glutamine and a multi-vitamin 2x per day.
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love challenging my body, being healthy, lifting heavy, the feeling of being on stage; the list goes on and on! I also love helping others reach their goals and transform their bodies! This is a sport that relies only on yourself... if you fail there is no one to blame but you.
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
Seeing the progress I'm making is probably my #1 motivator. Running a close second is all the amazing support and encouraging words I get from my friends and family. I have an amazing support system in my community and I could not do it without them.
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
To live a healthy life. At one point I did not take care of my body and I am so proud to be able to say that I am doing everything to the best of my ability to ensure that I will live a long and healthy life.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
To win my WBFF Pro Card (Hopefully at the WBFF BC Championships in April) and become a world renowned fitness model.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Nothing is ever perfect; there is always room for improvement. And always take days off, nothing is worse than over training and being burnt out. Listen to your body, if you are sore and tired take a break and hit it harder tomorrow!
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Wow I have so many but if I had to pick one I would have to say professional fitness model Annette Milbers-Fleck. She is beautiful, has an outstanding physique and an amazing personality to match.
What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?
I shop for a lot of my supplements as well as competition gear (ProTan, Bikini Bite etc.) on Bodybuilding.com. I have also had a BodySpace account for a year and a half now and all my friends on there have been an amazing support system. When I am having a bad day or my motivation is not quite at 100% there is always someone online to lend an ear and tell me to keep training hard.
