How Did You Get Started?

After I graduated from high school I weighed about 125 lbs and could bench around 100 lbs. I started lifting seriously in college to gain some size and to relieve the stress from hitting the books. I went to Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, VA as an undergraduate student, and studied pretty hard - double-majoring in math and economics with 3.9 GPAs in each. A couple of my roommates / friends were into lifting too, which made things easier. Results came slowly but going to the gym became part of my everyday routine. After graduation, I worked as a civilian for the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA for 3 years. Racking my brain and sitting at a desk for 8 - 12 hours a day provided plenty of motivation to keep hitting the gym. I have just finished my first year of graduate school at Virginia Tech in Applied Economics, earning a 4.0 GPA. I'm still going to the weight room, and I can't think of any reason that would ever make me stop.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I train 6 days a week with the following split:

  • Mon / Wed: Chest & Legs
  • Tues / Fri: Back & Biceps
  • Wed / Sat: Shoulders & Triceps
Abs are worked every day, Cardio is done 1-2 times per weekI use 4 or 5 different exercises at 3 sets each for a given body part. I keep my reps around 8-10 for each set unless I'm maxing out on bench (let's face it, everyone wants to know how much they can bench). I have kept this workout for about the last 4 years or so, varying the exercises I do from week to week. I train to near-failure on every set, but incorporating high-intensity training and training to complete failure is a good way to mix things up a little

Why do you love Bodybuilding?


Going to the gym is a great way to get away from the stress of everyday life. It gives me something to look forward to each day, and takes my mind off work or school. I love the sore feeling you get a day or two after you really work your legs / chest / arms / whatever. Seeing results come from your efforts in the gym is extremely rewarding. Knowing that your physique is changing because of the hard work you have put in every day comes with a great sense of accomplishment and shows a significant amount of self-motivation.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

Although I don't consider myself a "bodybuilder," I love working out and pushing myself to my personal limits. I know I'll never be one of those guys in the gym that weighs 220 and benches 600 lbs. To me, maintaining a decent physique is just part of the way I want to live my life.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Do what works for you. Everybody is different, and no one workout is going to produce magical results. Work hard while you're in the gym - don't fart around chatting your time away.
