How Did You Get Started?

I started lifting weights in high school to become stronger for competition cheerleading and this carried over into my college years. I worked out steadily my whole college career and decided to enter my first competition during the beginning of my senior year.

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I started out lifting pretty heavy and resting a long time between sets. I usually stayed in the gym for about an hour and a half. Now, I still lift moderately heavy, keeping my reps between 8-12, and I only rest about one minute between sets. I also try to superset as much as possible. This keeps my heart rate up and shortens my workouts to about 50 minutes. I put a lot of volume on my muscles without staying at the gym all day. I change up my splits quite frequently. Right now I am doing... Chest/Shoulders/Biceps, Back/Triceps, and Legs twice a week...I had to work really hard to gain muscle in my legs!

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

When preparing for a show my diet is pretty structured. I do not designate a cheat day, I just give myself a little something when I feel I need it. Here is a sample...

  • Meal 1 - Protein shake, piece of fruit
  • Meal 2 - 1/2 chicken breast or 3 oz tuna, brown rice or sweet potato
  • Meal 3 - Protein shake or egg whites
  • Meal 4 - Lean meat, poultry, or fish, and a green veggie
I also include some whole wheat bread, peanut butter, sugar-free jello, and occasionally low-fat cheese. When I am not training for a show, I still eat pretty clean, but include more complex carbohydrates and weekend splurges!

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I always use Whey Protein to supplement my diet, especially after a workout. It is a great way to get the extra Protein I need when I am training. Glutamine has also given me great results during contest preparation.

Why do you love Bodybuilding?

Fitness has become a lifestyle for me. I don't know how I could live if I wasn't active. I try not to let it run my life, but I cannot take a break from it for more than a week! I love the way I feel after a hard workout and if I am not sore the next day I wonder why. I also stay active so I can eat yummy food when I am not preparing for a show. Weights definitely take priority over cardio.

What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?

I competed in 2 figure shows this summer and I just started graduate school to get my Masters in Nutrition, so I am going to take a break for at least 8 months. I hope to compete in another national show and one day obtain my pro card. I think I need to obtain some more muscle maturity to compete at the national level. Older women seem to gain muscle easier than I do. I would love to compete in a Fitness competition in the future if I get the guts!

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

Try to stick with it if you get frustrated, but do not let it run your life. There are so many other things that are equally, if not more important than dieting down and training 24/7. Have fun with it, but also know that it is not going to be easy and you have to be dedicated. If it was easy, everyone would do it!

Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

I really enjoy watching Jenny Hendershott do her routines. She has so much attitude and expression and seems to compete against herself instead of the other competitors. I also like watching Stacy Hylton and Jenny Lynn.
