How Did You Get Started?
Four years ago, I decided to get "back in shape" after ending a long-term relationship. I'd jumped up to 30% bodyfat over the prior few years and felt emotionally, physically and spiritually exhausted. In general, I was disgusted with my overall health.
Over the next four months, I dropped my bodyfat from 30% to 24% using one of the latest "fad" diets currently on the market. But I hit a plateau with my weight and bodyfat. I didn't have the athletic look or toned muscles I was striving for. I knew my diet and how I was training was the issue but I didn't know where or who to turn to for help.
After stumbling across a flyer advertising a local Figure Bodybuilding competition, I decided to check out the event. That was the evening which changed my life! I discovered the sport of Figure Bodybuilding and knew I needed to get involved in this sport. The women on stage had the discovered the key to being fit, athletic and sexy!
I began setting my sights on my first competition 6 months later. At 34 years old, I entered the NPC Contra Costa Figure Competition in Hayward, California. It was the most amazing accomplishment I'd ever mastered! I got my body fat down to 16%. I placed 8th in my class and was proud that I "got on stage" for the first time.
Three years later, I'm still competing and doing better then ever, and enjoying the journey. I just won Overall Figure Masters Over 35 at the NPC Steel Rose Classic in March 2006. Last year, I took Overall Figure at the NPC San Jose Figure Championship. This win qualified me to compete National for the next 2 years.
Here is a history of all my great competition accomplishments so far:
- Steel Rose Classic - Overall Winner Master's Over 35 Figure
- Steel Rose Classic - 1st Place Master's Over 35 Figure Tall
- Steel Rose Classic - 2nd Place Figure B Class
- San Jose Championship - Overall Winner Figure Champion*
- San Jose Championship - Overall Winner Master's Over 35 Figure
- Central Valley Classic Championship - Overall Winner Master's Over 35 Figure
- Central Valley Classic Championship -1st Place Figure Class B
*National Qualifier Status Obtained
- Contra Costa Figure Championship - 8th place in Class B
- San Francisco Figure Championship - 7th place in Class B, 13th Master's Over 35
Beyond the personal gratification of training and competing in Figure Bodybuilding, I've had the opportunity to help others achieve their own personal fitness goals by sharing with them the knowledge I've gained. It's an incredible gift to see how I can help make people's dreams come true and assist in creating healthier lives in my community. I'm truly blessed and grateful to God for my life today.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
Currently, my goal in the off-season is to increase lean muscle mass. I lift 4 days a week, and I use forced reps on all exercises.
My Lifting Schedule:
Monday - Back, Abs and Biceps
Tuesday - Legs
Thursday - Shoulders, Calves
Friday - Chest, Triceps, Abs
My Cardio Schedule:
40 minutes at 65-75% resting heart rate, 6 days/week (Off-season); Up to 50 minutes twice per day, 7 days/week (Competition).
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
If you want to develop lean muscles and keep it, regular consumption of junk food has to be eliminated from your diet. And for me, bread (any type) is a cellulite magnet so I stay far away from it!
I eat lean proteins, low glycemic carbs, and lots of crunchy veggies. I always eat protein and complex carbs after I lift and I do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach. I also drink plenty of water. Almost 2 gallons a day!
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
L-Glutamine is the best supplement for women to make muscle gains. This supplement has been a constant in my diet over the last 3 years.
Also, a multivitamin/mineral is essential. And one aspirin a day (my grandfather has been doing this for his entire life, and he's 95 years old and still kicking it!)
During competition dieting, using a fat burner such as Nutrex Lipo 6 has helped me shed body fat.
Others I regularly use include:
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
The major reason I love fitness is the health benefits I've gained over the last three years.
Not only have I been able to get my weight and body fat under control, my cholesterol level has dropped from 199 to 170. Plus, my BMR has increased with the muscle mass gain.
| What Does BMR Stand For?
Base (or Basil) Metabolic Rate. This is the number of calories you would expend if you did zero activity all day.
Competing in Figure Bodybuilding has given me back my self-esteem. Each time I walk on stage, I do so with grace and dignity. Both are very powerful sensations for me...
Lastly, the friendships I've made from the sport of bodybuilding are everlasting. I've met some really wonderful women and men who are great role models and support.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Scheduled Future Competitions:
NPC Excalibur - December 2006
NPC Emerald Classic – 2007
NPC USA National Figure Championship – 2007
ISSA Personal Trainer (June 2006)
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Don't take yourself too seriously. Laugh at yourself once and while. Oh, one more....
Show up at your competition with the mindset of competing against nobody else but yourself. Once you start comparing yourself against the other girls, you've already destroyed the value of the experience.
Remember, thousands of girls don't have the courage or discipline to compete or even get on stage, for that matter. Savor the moment.
