How Did You Get Started?

I got started back in 1990 at the age of 30. I was going through a rough patch, so I joined a gym. It was my social life and my therapist during a difficult time. A couple of female gym rats took me under their wings (rats with wings?) and showed me the proper way to lift weights. I saw results so quickly that I was hooked immediately.

I've been strength training ever since. My husband, Jack, (who I met at the gym) and I both started our careers in the business world, but after years of playing that role, left it to pursue careers in fitness, becoming ACE-certified personal trainers. (Believe it or not, before that I was a CPA.) I think I have a unique story because, at age 49, I can honestly say I've been in shape my whole life.

I haven't been a saint, by any means, but I've always exercised. I've never had to lose weight. Never been on a diet and wear a smaller size now than in high school. How many folks my age can say that?

What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?

I constantly change my workouts, which is what works best for me, varying exercises, sets and reps, equipment, weight, etc. so my body never knows what I'm going to do next. I do a 4-day split and a sample week looks like this:

Day 1: Quads/Hams/Calves/Abs/Cardio

Day 2: Chest/Shoulders/Triceps/Cardio

Day 3: Glutes/Abs

Day 4: Back/Biceps/Abs/Cardio

Day 5: Rest

What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?

Honestly, my nutritional plan is a work-in-process right now. I have trouble following a strict meal plan, so I simply eat balanced, healthy meals with plenty of protein, complex carbs, healthy fats, lots of vegetables and fiber. I only eat out once a week with my 89-year old mom. That's my weekly treat!

Otherwise I cook everything. I'm only 103 pounds and not sure what my competition weight should be...should I gain? Should I lose? I'm learning quickly and listening to my body at the same time.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?

I'm new to bodybuilding supplements, but it seems the BCAAs, L-glutamine, creatine and CLA have really make a big difference in adding muscle since I started using them. I'm in the process of researching which products can help take me to the next level. I'd love to be a spokesperson for a company with an exceptional line of products.

    Why do you love Bodybuilding?

I love bodybuilding because of the strong, healthy, sexy body it gives me in return. It's worth every second of pain and sore muscles.

What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?

Over the years the things that motivate me to follow a healthy lifestyle have changed and evolved. In my 20's and 30's it was all about vanity. I simply wanted to look as good as possible. In my late 30's I had a freakishly rare medical condition - a spinal fluid leak. Years of chronic neck issues stemming from scoliosis took me down. Doctor's orders were to avoid anything that might increase the pressure in my head, which meant no weight lifting.

Against my will, I took a year off from strength training, but as soon as I could, I slowly started lifting again. At that point, in my early 40's, my motivation was to get my strength back in a safe fashion. Now my motivation is to become a role model for lifelong fitness. I can't imagine living any other way.

What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?

Tough question. I guess I decided it's time to get in the real game. I heard a saying recently that went something like, "If you don't do what scares you, you'll never become what you are meant to be." Achieving my goal of being in a fitness competition and taking home the trophy could open up endless opportunities for me. Reaching my goal of becoming a fitness role model and spokesperson would be life-changing. A dream fulfilled.

My future bodybuilding plans include entering my first competition. I've signed up for an NPC fitness competition on June 5 in Denver, CO. I'm also entering the June 30 FAME On-Line Championships.

What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?

    Never Quit!

    Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?

Ava Cowan is awesome. I love watching her videos and seeing her fierce intensity, in both body and mind. She's inspires me to set my goals high and push myself beyond my 'limits', to see what I'm capable of doing and becoming.

What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?

Bodybuilding.com is such a complete and comprehensive web site. I love logging on and exploring new areas. It covers every imaginable aspect of bodybuilding. I love the SuperSite and all the information it contains: articles, videos, exercises, workouts, etc., especially the ones on contest prep.

The Store is awesome. I think Bodybuilding.com has every product out there and then some. The Forums and BodySpace are a vital way to connect to other bodybuilders across the world. This website is the place to go for all things related to body building. It rocks!
