How Did You Get Started?
My father is a NPC Grand Masters bodybuilder and has been competing for over 20 years. He introduced me to weight training during my first year of high school. Every morning before I went to school we would perform a quick 20-minute dumbbell workout. As the years went by weight training became more and more serious.
My father tried to get me to compete. I had never heard of figure and immediately thought competing meant bodybuilding. I love to workout but was not interested in competing as a bodybuilder and did not have enough of a dance background to do fitness. I still continued to train and ate healthy as I completed my high school career.
My father introduced me to "figure" which I became extremely interested in. My dad set the date for me to do my first figure show with the WBFA in June 2004. After pushing myself to step on stage I ended up taking 1st place in the teenage figure division. It was at that moment that I was hooked.
The following month I competed in the WNBF open figure where I placed 4th. I was happy with my performance and decided to compete in my first NPC figure competition in September. I placed first in the Border States and qualified for Nationals. The following month I ended my season with a 3rd place in the NPC San Francisco Figure and Bodybuilding Championships.
This year, my season kicked off with an Overall Win at the World Gym Classic in San Diego. With the help of Tony Dodd with Tailor Made Physiques, I am now focusing on dialing in 110% for USA's in July. I am so lucky to have a father who believes in me and pushed me to compete, a boyfriend who sees my potential and supports me 100%, and a trainer who constantly keeps my head in the game both mentally and physically.
What Workout Plan Worked Best For You?
My workout plan that has worked best for me is training 5 days a week and Cardio 6-7 days a week. As far as my training goes, I like to split up each muscle group and vary the exercises I do week by week. My cardio workouts tend to vary between the elliptical, recumbent bike, and step mill. I have 1 complete off day where I don't train or do cardio.
What Nutrition Plan Has Worked Best For You?
In the past, I have been following a low carb diet eating mostly carbs from oatmeal and brown rice and tapering out my carbs as the day goes on.
I get my protein sources from chicken breast and egg whites and I eat tons and tons of vegetables. With the help of my trainer, Tony Dodd, from Tailor Made Physiques, I am now following a more balanced 50% 40% 10% diet, which is keeping my energy at a higher level and allowing me train harder. I have learned not to eliminate or be afraid of carbohydrates.
What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
I love working out, being in shape, and feeling good about myself. Fitness brings about the self-confidence and self love that I think everybody, male or female, needs to have in their lives.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
Update: Gina did very well at the USA's this year (2005) and accomplished her main goal. She has earned her Pro card!
Within the next couple of years I will have my BS in Food and Nutrition and possibly go on to get my masters in nutrition. With my educational background, I want to promote myself, within the industry, as a competitor, motivator, teacher, trainer and nutritional specialist.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
Be the best that you can be and always know that you have given 110% regardless of your placing. It is easy to get caught up in how you place or didn't place but the important thing is to know that you looked your personal best.
Fitness and Figure goes much further than the day of your contest. It is important to carry yourself with self-confidence year round and not only on the day of your show. Also I think it is important to know that everybody is different and what works for one competitor may not work for another.
