How Did You Get Started?
I was a swimmer all through high school and college, and I was decent at it. I wasn't the fastest, but I wasn't the slowest. I was okay. I basically loved to swim because it was a team sport, but still totally individual. I did not like relying on other people to accomplish my goals. I wasn't a team sports kind of girl-- besides the fact that I'm pitifully uncoordinated out of the water!
After college, I battled my weight for a number of years. A friend of mine has been encouraging me to try figure competitions and fitness modeling since he met me back in 2005. At the time I weighed around 170 pounds and was about 30% body fat. I thought he was insane. But he guided me in cleaning up my diet and introduced me to weight training.
Finally in 2008, I said "screw it, I'm going to try this" and put my nose to the grindstone for the 2008 NPC Northstar here in Minnesota. I went from 150 to 127 by show day and felt pretty dang proud of myself up on that stage. Though I didn't place, I still felt really proud of myself and now I've totally been bitten by the competition bug.

What Supplements Have Given You The Greatest Gains?
Why do you love Bodybuilding?
It's amazing to see how much more confidence I have in myself across the board as a result of taking control of myself and my life in the realm of fitness and health. I just feel better all around. I used to dread shopping and now it's much more fun when you're shopping in the 4s instead of the 12/14s. I'm motivating people around me as well. It's a wonderful ripple effect that I didn't expect.
People in my life will shoot me emails once in awhile to say that I inspired them to go to the gym again for the first time in 3 years. It honestly is just the best feeling to know that I'm helping people not make excuses and do something. It's wonderful. We all feed off of each other. It's a great cycle to be a part of.
It's unbelievably healthy for everyone-- physically, spiritually, and mentally. I love women looking strong, curvy, and confident instead of weak, waify, and like they need a sandwich.
What Motivates You To Follow A Healthy Lifestyle?
I just enjoy feeling comfortable in my own skin. I enjoy my off season and I like to take it easy, but it feels so good to move after I've rested for awhile. Also my boyfriend eats competition clean all year round and is very active. He's good at keeping me in check when I need it! I'm basically amazing at justifying cheat meals.
He just gives me a look and says, "So...should you really be eating that?" So I pout and back away from the cake my mom made. What a jerk! (Thanks for keeping me in line, babe!)
What Made You Want To Achieve Your Goals?
I mainly wanted to see if I could really transform into anything remotely close to the women that I saw on stage. It's been incredibly fun and rewarding to bust my butt and rock the stage, even if I haven't placed well yet. I like challenging myself and seeing how I can top myself in everything I do. I'm more in competition with myself and the goals I have set in my head and heart than I am with anybody on stage. Truthfully, I'm just too hard on myself sometimes.
It takes my friends, family, or boyfriend to remind me that I'm brand new to this sport and I shouldn't be bummed out if I don't do as well as I'd hoped for.
What Are Your Future Bodybuilding Plans?
I want to place first in one of my shows this year. I got 11th of 20 at my first show and I really would love to climb to the top in this realm of life. I feel like I have so much potential, it's just a matter of time till I accomplish the things I dream of. I was born for this. I have a fire in my belly and heart for it.
Eventually I want to get my NSCA certification in personal training, start my own business, and eventually start my own gym. But that's much, much later down the line.
What One Tip Would You Give Other Bodybuilders?
I guess I would tell other fitness competitors to do their thing, work hard, and don't stop being nice just because you're in a competitive field. Loosen up and be silly backstage, it makes it way more fun.
Who Are Your Favorite Bodybuilders?
Well, first I'd have to say that I have a lot of respect for anyone who has been doing this a long time and paid their dues in the competition world. One of my close friends here in Minnesota is a woman named Tara Thatcher. I met her last year and she's done a ton to help me out and support me. It's so nice and refreshing to have a competitor offer to take time to help you with your presentation, posing, and walk! I don't think I know anyone who jams her nose up to the grindstone more than she does and has insane self discipline.
Mine is pretty good but hers is daunting! Lots of love to the girls in Minnesota and the Midwest!
What Features Do You Use On Bodybuilding.com?
I get a lot of love from people I don't even know on Bodybuilding.com. Even if I forget to log in for awhile, people still leave me kind/supportive messages and feedback on my BodySpace account. It's awesome to get that!
